Nederman Pneumafil
Gas turbine inlet filters and air filtration systems
Nederman Pneumafil designs, manufactures and installs inlet air filtration systems that keep gas turbines running at maximum output efficiency. For over 50 years we have filtered the air for turbines of every make, in urban, industrial, coastal and remote locations worldwide.

The Basics
What is gas turbine inlet air filtration?
Gas turbine inlet air filtration is the set of weather protection, filters and moisture separators that cleans combustion air before it enters the compressor. A well-designed gas turbine air inlet system removes the dust, salt and water that would otherwise erode or foul compressor blades, reduce output and raise heat rate.
No inlet system can be designed to handle every extreme of atmospheric conditions. That is why many turbine filter houses are upgraded after commissioning, with inlet cooling, heavier pre-cleaning or moisture control, to improve the operating performance of the gas turbine.
Nederman Pneumafil supplies the complete turbine air system: new inlet filter houses, retrofits to existing ones, and replacement filters for all brands of pulse and static housing.
Why should you choose Nederman Pneumafil filters?
Inlet Air Treatment
Beyond The Filter
Many turbine filter houses are upgraded or rebuilt after commissioning, with extra equipment that improves turbine performance for the conditions the site actually sees.
Why filter pressure drop matters
Every filter stage adds resistance to the air the compressor draws in, and that resistance rises as filters load with dust. Keeping pressure drop low, through media design, pleat spacing and the right pre-filtration, helps the turbine hold its output between change-outs.
Approximate increase in power output for every degree Fahrenheit the compressor inlet temperature is lowered.
Typical maximum air cooling from chilled water coils, including in high-humidity sites where evaporative coolers struggle.
Approximate improvement seen by certain large frame turbines when evaporative cooling lowers inlet air from 30°C to 20°C.

Filtration Stages
Filtration stages of a static gas turbine air inlet system
Which stages a system needs depends on the environment it will face. Each stage protects the next, so the high-efficiency final filters deliver the best balance of efficiency, pressure drop and life.
Weather louver or hood
The first stage keeps out rain and snow. For sites with frequent fog or mist, choose the weather hood option with an integral droplet eliminator.
- Rain hoods are designed for a vertical inlet velocity of about 600 fpm
Inertial separator
Recommended where particulate concentration is higher than 0.1 mg/m³. Because it cleans by inertial separation, its arrestance efficiency stays constant under the most severe dust loading.
- 93% removal of particles 8 µm and larger; 99% at 20 µm and larger
Prefilters
Medium-efficiency, high dust holding capacity prefilters protect the final stage. Each is available in several efficiency grades and pleat depths.
- Y, Z and Panel Pleat series, MERV 8 to MERV 15
High-efficiency final filters
Turbine Mini-Pleat static barrier filters in micro-glass or 100% synthetic media, in standard 12 in. or extended 17 in. depth.
- MERV 14 to MERV 16, with E10 (EN 1822) options
An inertial separator protects static filters from plugging, but pulse-cleaned systems are often preferable in these conditions because they deliver lower pressure drop over the long term.
Selection Guide
Pulse-cleaned vs static gas turbine filtration
The right choice depends on how much dust your site sees, what kind it is, and how often you can change filters. A gas turbine air filtration engineer can help you decide.
| Pulse-cleaned system | Static (barrier) system | |
|---|---|---|
| How dust is removed | Short pulses of compressed air from inside each cartridge dislodge collected dust, which drops below the filter house for periodic removal. | Disposable filter elements in a structural holding frame capture dust and are replaced when loaded. |
| Best suited to | High ambient dust loads for extended periods, or sites where the environment has changed since installation. | Low, stable dust levels, and contaminants such as hydrocarbons or very fine particles that are too sticky or too light to pulse off. |
| Pressure drop over time | Lower over the long term in heavy dust, because the filter bank is cleaned in service. | Rises as elements load; an inertial separator stage helps protect filters in heavy dust. |
| Cleaning control | Rows pulsed in sequence by a digital timer, most efficiently on demand when differential pressure exceeds a set threshold. | No in-service cleaning; modules include a walk-in service area for inspection and change-out. |
| Typical filters | Cylindrical and conical cartridge pairs, or up-and-over twistlock cartridges. | Prefilters plus V-cell or mini-pleat barrier filters, up to E10 grade. |
What a crossflow pulse system looks like
In a crossflow inlet design, a cylindrical and a conical cartridge are installed one behind the other on a support cradle. These pairs are clamped in horizontal rows onto a vertical grid plate. Air enters through weather hoods, passes radially inward through the filter media, and exits through the grid plate into the clean air plenum.
Changing filter type when you replace a filter house
If you want longer intervals between final filter changes, moving from a static to a pulse-style gas turbine inlet filter house may be the best solution. Pulse filters are generally larger, so structural supports may need adding or modifying. Running a pulse house with self-cleaning switched off? PneuMax static cartridges are designed for exactly that.
Selection Guide
Gas turbine filter house retrofits and upgrades
Gas turbines often outlast their original inlet system. These upgrades restore safe operation, recover output and help a filter house cope with conditions it was never designed for.

Filter house replacement
Corroded walls and floors can make a filter house unsafe to enter and let unfiltered air and rain bypass the filters. A new house extends the life of the turbine and can raise MW output by reducing operating differential pressure.
- Survey, design, supply and installation

Evaporative cooling
Cooling the inlet air improves heat rate in warm climates with only a small increase in inlet pressure drop. Systems use rigid cooler media, distribution pads and drift eliminators.
- About 1.8% gain from 30°C to 20°C on certain large frame turbines

Chilled water cooling
For heavy cooling, or where evaporative cooling is not suitable. Pneumafil integrates coils, housings, structural verification, supply and return piping and installation.
- Up to 45°F of cooling, even in high humidity

Rain and mist control
Hoods, eliminator blades and coalescer pads remove free moisture before it raises filter pressure drop. Eliminator blades handle larger water volumes and higher face velocities, and are often used offshore.
- Stainless steel or polyester coalescing media

Anti-icing / Inlet heating systems
Anti-icing modules prevent ice forming on filter elements, the gas turbine inlet bell-mouth and other gas path components during cold, humid weather.
- Inlet heating upstream or downstream of filters

Bypass (implosion) doors
Passive, counterweighted doors open when pressure downstream of the filters falls to a set point, keeping combustion air flowing if filters clog with snow or ice. They can help meet part of a NERC cold weather operation plan.
- No power or controls required to open

Common things to know
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about gas turbine inlet filters
If your site sees high ambient dust loads for extended periods, or the local environment has changed since installation, a pulse-cleaned system is usually the better fit. If dust loads are low and local studies have always shown low levels, a static system may be sufficient. Static systems are also preferred where contaminants are hydrocarbons or very fine particles that are too sticky or too light to be dislodged by pulsing.
An inertial separator is recommended as a pre-cleaning stage where particulate concentration is higher than 0.1 mg/m3. It removes heavier particles and moisture so the downstream filters do not plug quickly. Pneumafil inertial separators remove 93% of particles 8 micrometres and larger, and 99% of particles 20 micrometres and larger.
For every degree Fahrenheit that compressor inlet temperature is lowered, power output increases by about 0.33%. Chilled water coils can typically provide up to 45 degrees F of cooling, even in high humidity. With evaporative cooling, certain large frame turbines can see about a 1.8% improvement for a temperature reduction from 30 degrees C to 20 degrees C.
Moisture is removed in stages. Weather hoods are sized so the vertical inlet velocity stays below the terminal velocity of falling rain. Eliminator blades force air through a convoluted path so droplets impinge, coalesce and drain. Coalescer pads, the most efficient stage for fine droplets, agglomerate mist into a stream that drains from the filter house.
Yes. Nederman Pneumafil manufactures replacement filters for pulse and static inlet housings from other suppliers, including Donaldson, Braden, AAF (American Air Filter) and Camfil. The Pneumafil gas turbine filter cross reference lists equivalent Pneumafil part numbers for common OEM filters.
Because gas turbines are maintained on regular major maintenance intervals, they often outlast the original inlet filter house. Replacement is usually triggered by corrosion of walls and floors that makes the house unsafe to enter or lets unfiltered air and rain bypass the filters. Replacement is also the right time to change filter type, raise efficiency, add moisture stages or add inlet cooling.
