What is a packed bed scrubber?

The packed bed scrubber is a common form of wet scrubber for industrial applications. They remove gaseous pollutants from airflows.

When properly designed and built by experienced air pollution engineers, these scrubbers capture and neutralize dangerous and poisonous gases from air streams before expelling clean air into the atmosphere.

Preferred over plate and tray designs

Packed bed scrubbers are generally favored over older designs such as “plate” or “tray” scrubbers.

Principle of operation

How does a packed bed scrubber work

Gas and scrubbing liquid travel in opposite directions through the column. Because the gas gets cleaner as it climbs while the liquid gets more loaded as it falls, the gas always meets fresher solvent than the stage below it.

Pollutant-laden gas enters at the bottom

Pollutant laden gases enter at the bottom of the packed tower and rise upward.

Rising gas meets liquid draining down the column

The gas makes contact with the scrubbing liquid draining down through the packed column. Since the pollutant concentration decreases as the gas rises, there is constantly fresher solvent available for contact, resulting in an efficient removal of contaminants.

Suspended droplets are stripped from the clean gas

Finally, the fine moisture droplets, still suspended in the cleaned gas stream, are removed by a mist eliminator.

Scrub liquid is collected and recycled

Scrub liquid from the eliminator is collected in an integral reservoir and recycled to the tower.

Reagent is dosed on demand under pH control

Makeup liquid is constantly introduced, and reagent is added on demand using a dosing pump controlled by a pH monitor.

Nederman MikroPul Packed Tower systems can be applied as gas absorbers, coolers, air humidifiers, or condensers. They are widely applied in the field of purification of industrial gases.

Gas absorber

Transfers a target gaseous contaminant out of the gas stream and into the scrubbing liquid across the wetted packing.

Cooler

Drops the temperature of a hot gas stream by direct contact with the recirculating liquid before downstream equipment.

Air humidifier

Raises the moisture content of the gas stream by evaporative contact as it passes up through the packed section.

Condenser

Condenses vapor out of the gas stream by cooling it below its dew point against the descending liquid.
