US news sources continue to report large declines in coal-fired power generation. Year to date, coal power has produced about 14% less than 2018. Retirements of plants has been quite stable at around 57 plants per year. Yet, there are over 300 operating plants as the year closes.
Many of these plants cover a swath of territory between Iowa in the Midwest and New Jersey and are affected by brutal weather in the winter. It’s a challenge to keep coal moving to the plant in these conditions. Typically, material is delivered from barges on the waterways or by rail cars.
